Methodology
How We Review Agencies
Every agency ranking on MakeSuccessOnline follows the same process. Here is what we look at, where the data comes from, and what we do when the evidence is thin.
Where our data comes from
Each agency profile is built from sources anyone can check:
- The agency's own materials. Its website, service pages, published case studies, pricing pages and named client lists.
- Independent reviews. Ratings, review counts and review text on platforms such as Clutch and G2, along with the minimum project size and hourly rates agencies list there.
- Agency submissions. Details agencies send us are treated as claims until we can confirm them from one of the sources above.
Results an agency reports about itself are attributed to the agency ("it reports…"), never stated as fact. If we can't verify a claim, it doesn't go on the page.
How we build a ranking
- Define the pool. We start with every agency in the directory that lists the service, and narrow it to those that list the industry or are based in the location the page covers. The pool size is shown at the top of each ranking.
- Score each agency. Agencies are compared on the criteria below, weighted for what matters most to buyers of that service.
- Pick for distinct needs. Each pick has to win a clear category, such as budget level, company size, sub-niche or channel, so the list covers different buyers rather than ten versions of the same agency.
- Write it up honestly. Every pick gets a "best for" label, the evidence behind it and a "watch out" covering its main trade-off, such as price, scope, size or thin reviews.
- Editorial review. An editor checks every fact on the page against the sources before it is published.
What we score
The exact weights change from ranking to ranking. A cold email ranking leans harder on deliverability practice, a local SEO ranking on local results. Each page shows its own criteria and weights in its "How we chose" section. These are the factors we draw from:
Specialisation and fit
How central the service is to the agency, and whether it lists clients in the industry, company size or market the page covers.
Evidence of results
Named clients, published case studies and specific outcomes we can trace back to a source.
Client reviews
Rating and review volume on independent platforms. A 4.9 from 80 reviews counts for more than a 5.0 from three.
Pricing clarity
Whether minimums, retainers or hourly rates are published, and how they compare with the rest of the pool.
Team and capability
Team size, in-house versus outsourced delivery, and the range of channels the agency can run itself.
Readiness for AI search
Where relevant, whether the agency offers work aimed at AI search results such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
When few agencies match
Some rankings cover niches or cities where few agencies in our directory are a direct match. We never pad those lists or imply a specialism an agency doesn't have. Instead:
- The page says plainly, near the top, how many agencies are a direct match.
- Agencies based elsewhere are labelled with where they are based and that they work with clients remotely.
- Agencies from an adjacent field are labelled as such, for example "doesn't list dental clients, but works with healthcare practices".
- Lists get shorter rather than weaker. A ranking can have four picks if only four deserve a place.
How we report pricing
Cost figures on each ranking are calculated from the agencies in that page's pool: the median minimum engagement, the share of agencies in each budget tier, and the most common hourly bands. When a pool is small, the page says the figures come from a small sample. Every figure comes from minimums and rates agencies publish themselves; we don't estimate prices an agency hasn't published.
Independence and disclosures
- Agencies cannot pay to appear in a ranking or to change their position, and listing in the directory is free.
- Where an agency has a business connection to MakeSuccessOnline, its entry in every ranking carries a disclosure saying so.
Updates and corrections
Every ranking shows when it was last reviewed. We recheck pricing, team details, reviews and client lists as agencies change, and update rankings when the evidence changes.
Spotted something out of date? Send us a correction with the page link and what changed. Agencies that aren't listed yet can submit their agency.
Editor & Reviewer, MakeSuccessOnline
William Harrison is an editor and reviewer at MakeSuccessOnline. Before a ranking goes live, he checks every claim on the page against each agency's own site, its published case studies and independent reviews on Clutch and G2, and cuts anything he can't verify. He also keeps rankings current, rechecking pricing, team details and client lists as agencies change.
